Crazy week I can't believe it :(
« on: November 07, 2011, 05:29:48 am »
What a week just stupid roller coaster emotional ride.  So I was home with the kids last week  and the wife went out with her sisters and girlfriends for dinner evening.  On her way home shes driving and goes totally numb on her left side.  As she is driving shes talking to me on the phone and losing all feeling and motor control.  I had our eldist daughter watch the younger ones and I met her at the hospital.

They admit her right away into emergency and start checking her out running tests etc.  By this time she has no motor control on her left side.  They do cat scan its ok,  wait for hours on end for a specialist to come by he thinks its something called Bell's palsy.

I have never heard of it before but just a flat out scary situation we thought maybe a stroke.  She got into get a mri a couple days later and that came back good.  So the verdict is Bell's palsy she is on meds now,  but between work, kids, school, pre school dance, gymnastics cooking cleaning nursing the wife I need some sleep.

Anyway have anyone heard of Bell's palsy? Delt with it or know anyone that has?   I had never heard of it ever till now.  Done some reading up on it but seems like not much is known about it.

You know, a few years back my brother-in-law was sitting at the table for dinner with us and I noticed it looked like his face had Chew in it (because at that time he used to chew tobacco ). I thought gross, chewing while eating. I didn't say anything and I just watched him. Finally I said something and he ended up with a similar condition where his whole face went numb and was losing function of the muscles. It sounds like the same thing here.

Since then, it has went away and he has not seen it return. He was under a lot of stress at the time and it was attributed to just that.

I am assuming that your wife might be under some current event or career based stress in her life. I would recommend that she take it easy and that if this is a long term career stress that she change jobs if it continues or even now. I know that caregivers, and Information technology are the main groups that are under a lot of stress with their jobs. If she is in either of these fields you should try to reduce your income spent and get her situated into something less stressful for the sake of her long term health. If it is a situational stress then I recommend taking time off from anything else including work for a short period until these issues reside. Of course I am just talking from experience and it might be something completely different - just adding my 2cents as best I can.

Remember that conditions like these are hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. Even with testing a lot of doctors do guess work. I would spend a good half a day researching when you can - similar conditions just to be safe. There might be an underlying issue that the doctors are overlooking.

Best of luck with this I know something like this can be very scary.

Sorry to hear that, man.  A lot of neurological conditions fall into this category, because, as much as we'd like to think otherwise, we really have a limited understanding of how the human brain functions.  Just make sure to watch out for weird symptoms and remember to take care of yourself as well.  Good luck.

thanks guys

EC yes totally stress driven we can pin point the exact situation.  She is getting better slowly but you know how women are when it comes to their looks.  I think this is getting her down more than being ill. Meds seem to be working and able to blink her left eye half way now still has a crooked smile though.

So a little update from the last couple days she has lost most feeling again on her left side again even though on meds.  Gone for more testing today now testing for MS.  Keeping positive trying to keep her positive is tough

Sorry to hear that but it's good you're staying positive. That really is the best thing you can do for her. There's a tremendous amount of evidence out there of people overcoming things just by believing they will and the opposite being true, when people give up and are negative things get worse.

Just keep her feeling positive and keep reminding her of cases where this just disappears completely and never returns to people because of things like stress. If you make her mind believe it's a temporary thing then it's much more likely to go away and never return.

Our thoughts are with you.. Keep us updated on how things go, bro.

Back from our extremely brutal roller coaster ride!  So the wife is in the wide open clear getting better by the day MS is ruled out which is really awesome but during the trying time with us....our neighbor died of cancer last week :( Only one month ago she was feeling a little off 2 weeks to get a biop and another 2 weeks she is gone.  So quick so fast its mind boggling..... So things have been brutally sad in our parts lately.  I am grateful and happy my wife is going to be ok and you know what even if she had a really terrible illness just to have her with us is so much more important!  Life is just too short.

Glad to hear your wife is improving and everything is ok.

Shame about the neighbor, but I don't believe earth is the end of our journey so he/she will be somewhere fun on new adventures. :-)
